my little corner of the world

thesis show 2021

I love the world, I love everything so much it’s stupid!

When I say love, I mean a compelling force to care, connect, be with. It’s a wildfire. Fireworks. Running through a rose garden. "A Breath of Life.”

When I say everything, I mean it.

This series of works is interested in love and the limitations that occur when translating typical human conventions of love in plants, fruits, and objects. These works bring up a layered discussion of animacy, love, reciprocity, and personhood. There’s an earnest irony embedded throughout the work; the incorporation of humor acts as a leeway to discuss critical questions. Is love universal? Do non-human beings understand these expressions of love? Do they love me back? Do they love at all? Do they have rights or personhood?

In the sculptures there’s a longing for connection through the amalgamation of found objects/stickers, quilting of citrus skins, and the “pairing” quality of some sculptures (e.g. love lock and key). The video works consisting of me and The Oldest Palm Tree in Los Angeles also portray longing – longing for requited love and citizenship.

In my little corner of the world, love is universal. There is universal healthcare, no borders, no cops, no constructs. Everything is free to “dream a little dream in my little corner of the world."
